Educational Activities:
1. Map out trails which formed in Nebraska (Gordon, Sidney to Deadwood, etc.)
2. Which laws were made in Nebraska during the outlaw reign?
3. Research the possibilities: Why did James Riley take the name Doc Middleton? Where did the other alias originate?
4. Explore cultural differences in regards to horse theft. How did the settlers feel about it? Native Americans? Why would it have been more "acceptable" to steal horses from the Indians during a horse raid but not immediately after the Wounded Knee Massacre?
5. What symbols would you use as your signature? Would you have chosen a hand and a heart for Doc Middleton? If not, what symbol would you choose for him?
6. When performing the song, use spurs as a rhythm instrument . Also choreograph body movements or hand motions for the chorus. Discuss how movement patterns can enhance a story or express ideas or moods; analyze the performance to see if the choreography matches the message the students wish to portray.
