Doc Middleton: Marked with the Devil's Brand
Marked with the Devil’s Brand

After his term in prison
Claimed he was a new man
Claimed he’d only stolen ponies
From the Indians

He became a deputy
Worked with Buffalo Bill
Travelled as a gambler
Fought the urge to steal

But, when you throw a bone to the Black Dog
He’ll be back for more
When you smile on Temptation
She’ll come knockin’ at your door
When you lay your cards on the table
Everybody knows your hand
When you deal in stolen ponies
You’re marked with the Devil’s brand

Winter of 1890
Came opportunity
to steal some Indian ponies
after Wounded Knee

Twenty some years later
After that last raid
His soul is marked for eternity
As he lies in an unmarked grave

‘Cause, when you throw a bone to the Black Dog
He’ll be back for more
When you smile on Temptation
She’ll come knockin’ at your door
When you lay your cards on the table
Everybody knows your hand
When you deal in stolen ponies
You’re marked with the Devil’s brand
