1. Pretend you are Baptiste. Keep a diary and write about various stages of his life. For instance: his feelings after his parents left him with Clark, hearing of his mother's death, traveling with Prince Paul, and living as a mountain man.
2. How do you think he managed to remember his own language among all the other he learned?
3. Find out all you can about Prince Paul. What brought him to America? Where is Wuttemberg?
4. Choose one of the mountain men who were friends with Baptiste and write about his life. Have him tell about his experiences with Baptiste.
5. Why do you think Baptiste chose to stay in the West instead of going someplace where he could use the education he had gotten overseas?
6. How would his education have helped him in the career he chose?
7. Why do you think Baptiste eventually went seeking gold?
